Online Technical Manuals

Consult the Staff Tipsheets or Student Tipsheets pages for instructions on how to use the Blackboard system from an administrative perspective. These tipsheets are being progressively written, and more information will be released in future tipsheets.

A full manual is available from the central Blackboard site. Please note that this is an external resource that uses non-QUT terminology and refers to some functionality not available in QUT Blackboard.

Known Issues

A Known Issues log is being kept for QUT Blackboard. Check this if you encounter a problem on QUT Blackboard, as the problem may already have been reported, and there may be a workaround available for the problem.

Technical Requirements

The minimum technical requirements to access QUT Blackboard are:

Operating System

  • MacOS 9.x or later; OR
  • Microsoft Windows 9x or later

Internet Browser

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x or later (not 7.0 currently in testing) ; OR
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.0.x or later (not 3.0 currently in testing); OR
  • Netscape 7.1 or later; OR
  • Safari 1.0 or later

Software

  • Pop-up blocking software disabled, OR configured to allow pop-ups from http://blackboard.qut.edu.au

Recommended technical requirements for QUT Blackboard access are:

Operating System

  • MacOS 10.4 or later; OR
  • Microsoft Windows XP or later

Internet Browser

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x or later (not 7.0 currently in testing); OR
  • Mozilla Firefox 1.5.x or later (not 3.0 currently in testing); OR
  • Safari 2.x or later

Software

  • Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.x or later;
  • Microsoft Office 2003; OR
  • Microsoft Office Viewers; OR
  • OpenOffice.org
  • Pop-up blocking software disabled, OR configured to allow pop-ups from http://blackboard.qut.edu.au
  • Firewall software configured to allow traffic from ports 8010 and 8011 to allow Chat and Virtual Classroom access, and port 1935 to allow AV Chat access

Plug-ins

  • Flash Player
  • Sun Java 1.5 or later
