Creative Industries Communities of Practice and Blackboard Community Sites
Presenter: Greg Jenkins, Creative Industries Faculty
Time: 11:00pm – 11:30pm, F705
Communities of practice require a regular and reliable supply of current news and information about their participants and area of interest to remain vibrant. This project uses community sites in blackboard as an aggregation service for news, information and opportunities centred around each of the eight discipline areas within the faculty as well as Honours and Post Graduate Cohorts.
Using the announcements function of each community site instead of sending bulk emails sets up a “pull” information culture. This has several advantages over the “push“ culture – it does not proliferate email spam; it requires the participants take responsibility for finding information; and this in turn makes participants more likely to engage with the information.
Participants also have the ability to join communities other than their home discipline thus enhancing the chances of interdisciplinary communications and projects.
