Casting a wide net: Technical challenges of podcasting within a "standard operating environment"

Dr Nathan D. Moss
Lecturer | School of Psychology and Counselling| Faculty of Health

Nathan Moss

Since graduating from both the University of Queensland, and the University of New South Wales, Dr Nathan Moss has worked in a number of academic institutions including The University of Sydney, Newcastle University, Australian Catholic University, and The University of Ballarat. Dr Moss has worked specifically in cross discipline teaching and in teaching to large classes.

Always interested in the use of technologies and how they can help advance learning, Dr Moss is a self-confessed technology geek. He has been the previous recipient of an Apple Teaching Development Award for the creation of a Multimedia Program for teaching students across disciplines to Navigate Medical Records.

Project Summary

The project involved podcasting the complete lecture series of three of the units of study coordinated by Dr Moss in 2006. For the three series, “enhanced” podcasts were used. This means that the PowerPoint images used in the lectures, together with audio, were transmitted in each podcast.

Dr Moss believes this successful podcasting may be unique for three reasons:

  • it involved entire and enhanced lecture programs
  • three units were podcast
  • QUT is one of a handful of universities experimenting with the podcasting of lecture programs.

Dr Moss used a series of power-point slides to introduce his presentation. He then showed the pod-casting of lectures in three of his units .
