TALSS offers a series of academic skills workshops throughout each semester to assist students. These are not lectures. They are interactive and activity-based sessions that focus on practical strategies to enhance your
efficiency and confidence with university study.
To participate in these workshops, it
is essential that you register your attendance. See all the upcoming workshops in calendar view or list view.
This interactive session introduces QUT life, the expectations on students and the support available. There will be ample opportunity to ask questions and meet fellow students.
Study and time management
Learn to manage and organise your time more effectively and develop efficient study habits.
Reading and note-making skills
Learn how to manage large volumes of reading as well as some strategies for effective note-making.
Academic Writing 1: What is it?
Develop an understanding of academic writing conventions and improve your writing structure and flow. This workshop covers paragraph structure; how use transitions to link ideas throughout your paper and how to write effective introductions and conclusions. It will also introduce critical thinking skills.
Academic Writing 2: The writing process
Learn how to analyse and understand assignment questions. Develop good planning habits and drafting skills.
Editing and Proofreading
Develop an understanding of the difference between and the importance of editing and proofreading. Learn effective editing and proofreading strategies.
Group work
Understand the importance of working in groups and develop practical strategies to ensure your group's effectiveness.
Oral Presentations
Increase your confidence by learning simple strategies to give an effective presentation. This workshop will also help you develop an understanding of how to respond to questions.
Exam preparation
Learn how to prepare for a variety of exam types. Develop practical strategies for improving exam efficiency.
Academic Skills Saturday Sessions
If you can’t make the weekday sessions then register for any of these Saturday sessions.

Session 3: Academic Writing: The writing process
Session 4: Group work and oral presentations.
Content covered in these worksops is the same as that in the weekday session. If you register for a Saturday workshop please do not register for the same weekday session.
